Cool roofs use high-reflectance colors and IR-reflective granules to lower attic temperature. In hot climates the cooling-bill savings are real; in cold climates they're a net negative.
How cool roofs work
Solar reflectance (SR) measures how much sunlight the roof bounces back. Thermal emittance (TE) measures how quickly it re-radiates absorbed heat. ENERGY STAR shingles must hit SR ≥ 0.25 initial (0.15 after 3 years) for low-slope, higher for steep-slope.

Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston: 8–15% cooling-bill reduction, roughly $150–$400/year on an average home.
Atlanta, Dallas, LA: 5–10%, roughly $80–$200/year.
Northern climates: cooling savings are offset by heating penalty in winter. Net near zero.

Most light-colored metal roofs qualify automatically.
Concrete and clay tile — most SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) ≥ 29 tiles qualify in CA Title 24 markets.
Tax credits and rebates in 2026
The federal residential energy credit for cool roofs expired in 2022 and has not been renewed. State-level credits exist in CA, FL, GA, LA, and NY, and many utilities offer $200–$1,000 rebates for ENERGY STAR roofs.
