Roof Leak Diagnosis: Finding the Source (Not Just the Stain)

Water shows up feet away from its entry point. Here's how professional roofers trace a leak to its real source.

The ceiling stain almost never sits directly under the leak. Water travels along rafters, decking, and insulation before dripping โ€” sometimes 10+ feet from entry.

Common entry points, in order of frequency

Flashing around chimneys, skylights, and wall intersections (60% of leaks).

Pipe boots โ€” the rubber gasket cracks after 10โ€“12 years.

Nail pops in shingles and lifted ridge caps.

Ice dams and clogged valleys.

The trace-back method

Locate the stain. Trace uphill along the rafter to the first roof penetration. Inspect flashing, boots, and nail heads within a 6-foot radius above the stain.

When to call a pro

Multiple stains, active drips in a rainstorm, or any leak near a chimney โ€” these fail DIY fixes and grow expensive quickly.
